4 Steps to Rebuild Confidence After a Break in fitness.

Maybe it’s been weeks. Maybe months. Maybe you’ve just come back from childbirth, an injury, or just one of those life phases where everything else came first. Now, you’re ready to move again — but confidence? That feels a little out of reach.

First of all: you’re not alone, I personally have experienced this, on a few occasions. Firstly when my back went on me and secondly after the birth of our beautiful little daughter. At our Truro Pilates studio (and online too!), I meet so many people who feel this way. The truth? Confidence isn’t something you have before you start — it’s something you build by starting. And here’s a simple, playful 4-step approach to try and help you do that.

1. Start Small, Start Often (This is my absolute key!)

Forget “all or nothing.” When it comes to getting back into movement, small sessions — even 10 minutes — can do wonders. Try a short on-demand Pilates class or a gentle in-studio session. It’s not about how long you move, it’s about showing up. Consistency builds momentum, and momentum builds confidence.

2. Focus on What You Can Do (I struggled with this one!)

Your body might feel different. That’s okay. Don’t measure yourself against how you moved before — focus on what’s available to you now. I know just how hard this is. I remember lying in hospital after a traumatic and long birth which ended up EC-Section and not being able to move my legs, it literally felt like my whole body had gone! Pilates is incredible for reconnecting with your strength, breath, and core — especially after injury or birth. Celebrate the wins, no matter how small. THEY COUNT! I remember a few weeks on, being able to finally lift my heel off the floor with actual connection to my core, it was AMAZING! (I can now lift my legs over my head again… go me!👏).

3. Make It Personal

Your return to movement is your own. There’s no single path, no set standard. Whether you’re rebuilding after childbirth or easing in post-injury, find classes (or instructors) that support your needs. That’s why we keep our Truro classes small and offer flexible on-demand sessions — so you can move on your terms. Being comfortable in your environment is SO IMPORTANT.

4. Keep It Playful

Perfection doesn’t build confidence — happiness does. So laugh when you wobble, try something new, dance it out before class if that feels good. Let movement be something you enjoy, not just something you do. You’re allowed to have fun while getting strong. I am 100% up for a laugh, I wouldn’t be able to be serious and teach, why would I? I enjoy and LOVE what I do, its not brain surgery!

Ready to Begin Again?

Confidence isn’t a finish line — it’s a practice. And like any good Pilates move, you build it one breath, one session, one happy thought at a time. Whether you’re joining us in our Truro studio or pressing play at home, we’re here to help you feel like you again — strong, centred, and supported.

I’m here every step of the way, so got a question, just reach out!
